Witches have long been a symbol of femininity and power and have held significance in pop culture, although rarely understood. Within pop culture there has been limited exposure to witches of color, despite the fact that many customs of witches in pop culture/media are appropriated from traditions of many afro/latin/indigenous cultures/religions. In the last few years there has been a cultural movement by womyn of color to reclaim the image, history, and narrative of what it means to be a witch or spiritual practitioner. COVEN is a multimedia exhibition that will explore this narrative and the “modern witch” as it relates to femininity, and identity.
